May is used to express wishes and hopes in a formal way. It often comes at the beginning of the sentence to introduce a wish or hope.
- Let us hope and pray that this war may soon be over.
May he rest in peace.
A prayer of respect and sympathy for a dead person, often written on gravestones and also abbreviated to R.I.P. – Rest in Peace.
