MacbethThe prefix un- is often used with verbs to describe the opposite of a process or the reverse action.

  • To lock – to unlock
  • To pack – to unpack
  • To roll – to unroll
  • To plug – to unplug
  • To dress – to undress
  • To screw – to unscrew
  • To tie – to untie

The prefix un- is also often used with adjectives, adverbs and nouns to mean ‘not’ or ‘the opposite of.’

  • Able – unable
  • Certain – uncertain
  • Funny – unfunny
  • Expected – unexpected
  • Intelligent – unintelligent
  • Consciously – unconsciously
  • Willingly – unwillingly
  • American – un-American (not typical of the US or against American values or interests)
